What is the course about?

This course prepares ESOL learners for a nationally recognised Functional Skills English qualification at Level 1 or Level 2. Functional Skills courses aim to give learners the skills to apply their knowledge, skill and understanding in order to participate and progress in everyday life, education, training and employment in the UK. The skills of speaking, listening and communication; reading and writing will be continually assessed through "real life" task based activities with students being entered for either the Level 1 or Level 2 exam only after a minumum of 1 year (2 x 16 week terms) and if the tutor feels learners are sufficiently prepared to achieve a successful outcome. In order to be entered for exams, language must be fit for purpose and audience with accurate grammar and, for written tasks, accurate spelling and punctuation.

What previous experience, knowledge or qualifications do I need for this course?

This course is for ESOL learners who have achieved Entry 3 and are now working towards either Level 1 or Level 2 or have equivalent language acquisition in all skills. The course provides a recognised qualification for employment purposes and serves as good preparation for those wishing to study for high grade GCSE English.

The course is for 32 weeks across 2 semesters. It is very important that learners attend class and complete homework on time in order to fully benefit from the course. Mock assessments will take place each term which will need to be passed, along with consistent attendance, in order to be entered for an exam. Entry for an exam may be delayed until the candidate is ready.
