Aspire wins contract to provide West Sussex adult education

Aspire Sussex Ltd has successfully bid to run adult education courses across the county.

It is the current provider of the contract which ends in August 2017.

The contract will run for an initial period of three years, starting on 1 September 2017, with an option to extend for a further period of up to four years.

In 2012 Aspire Sussex Ltd was created as an independent body to provide adult education for West Sussex residents. Previously it was a West Sussex County Council service.

Now Aspire Sussex runs the service on behalf of the County Council.

Robyn Kohler, Chief Executive Officer of Aspire Sussex, said: “We are pleased to have won the contract to run adult education courses for people who live and work in West Sussex. We look forward to continuing to work with the County Council to provide good quality adult education.”

Aspire Sussex achieves ‘good’ Ofsted report

We are pleased to confirm that we have achieved a ‘good’ report from Ofsted.

This is a very positive step up, and demonstrates the progress that we have made in the last 18 months.

At a previous inspection in November 2015, the adult education service was deemed inadequate. But this time around, Ofsted inspectors praised the overall effectiveness of the service, concluding it is ‘a good provider’.

Categories that received a ‘good’ rating during the inspection include:

  • Effectiveness of leadership and management
  • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Personal development, behaviour and welfare
  • Outcomes for learners
  • Adult learning programmes

Key findings include:

  • Skilled, experienced and enthusiastic tutors use their teaching expertise and subject knowledge well to inspire most students
  • Since the previous inspection, tutors, supported by managers, have much improved their ability to help students develop mathematical skills; as a result, students, many for the first time, improve these skills and recognise the relevance of mathematics in their daily lives
  • Students who have learning difficulties and disabilities, many of whom live in residential settings, enjoy their learning and make good progress

Peter Catchpole, Cabinet Member for Adult Services at West Sussex County Council, said: “I am delighted Ofsted inspectors rated the service as ‘good’ and noted the improvements that have been made.

“The adult education service is so important to help give learners in West Sussex the best opportunities to find employment.”

Robyn Kohler, Chief Executive Officer of Aspire Sussex, said: “We have worked hard alongside officers from the County Council to improve our service. We will be taking on board the recommendations of the Ofsted inspectors to further improve adult education for our learners.”

The full Ofsted report can be viewed via reports.ofsted.gov.uk and searching for Skills West Sussex County Council.
