Talk and Taste Evening

Join us for our first Talk and Taste evening of gin, chocolate and nibbles on Wednesday 14th November 2018, 7pm-9pm!

Hear the stories from three local producers, Jarrold’s Gin, Le Salon Du Chocolat and Zest for Taste, ask questions and taste their produce.

There will also be the opportunity to buy their produce at the end of the evening if you want to stock up on some treats or gifts for Christmas.

Participants must be aged 19+ due to the gin tasting. If you are lucky enough to look under 25 please bring some photo ID with you as you may be asked to prove your age.

We are close to the train station, bus station and taxi ranks – don’t drink and drive.

Centenary of World War One – Saturday Workshops

2018 marks 100 years since the end of World War One. To commemorate this 100 year anniversary, Aspire Sussex is offering a selection of Saturday workshops on the 17th November at Marle Place Burgess Hill.

Casts Of The Past: Remembrance Tiles From Clay Moulds (M0943CF18)
This course which introduces the technique of plaster casting; impressing objects or the drawing with tools into clay to create a mould from which plaster is then poured into the mould to create a tile cast. The tile can then be treated to simulate metal or simply painted or stained and varnished to create colour effects.

The theme of WW1 will be explored through the use of related objects and drawing tools to create tile designs which will reflect the embedding of memories in this significant remembrance year.

Remembrance Of A Field Of Poppies: Acrylic Painting In The Impressionist Style (M0944CF18)
Marking the centenary of the Great War with our special event day, this friendly, relaxed course will be focusing on using Impressionist styles to paint Poppies, both in detail and from a distance as well as fields and foliage. We will be looking at the lives and work of Impressionist artists such as Monet and Renoir and tuition will be given on brushwork, tonal values and colour. Students will be taught a variety of painting techniques through demonstration and discussion.

Artists’ Experience Of The Great War (M0945CF18)
This Day Course looks at the impact of World War One on artists active at the time, both German Artists and the Allies. How the war changed their outlook and style. We shall be taken through some short biographies of the artists and look at what they produced before and after the War and how it changed their careers.

Talks On The Great War: The War Effort At Home (M1001CF18)
This course will look at how the war impacted people’s lives and how they responded to the challenges of fighting a global war. This will include looking at such issues as conscription, rationing, changes to industry and farming, and the role of women, and the fate of German an Austrian ‘aliens’. It will also consider the effect that restrictions had on individual liberties during the war. Where possible, examples from the experience of Sussex will be discussed.

The Great War Seen Through Literature (M1295CF18)
We will look at various writers through novels and journals and see World War One through their eyes. We will discuss various aspects and try to get a feel for how it was to live through both at home and in the trenches.
