We will source plants and flowers for their natural pigments and combine with natural charcoal and chalk onto a choice of surfaces. The workshop will cover sourcing materials and quick sketching from the land surrounding the studio, grinding materials to create paint like textured effects, learning to extract dyes from plants instantly, adding plant forms into a composition and the use of binding agents. There will be a short walk followed by working inside the studio.

You will learn about the original Roman mosaics of the Palace to inspire you to make a unique design, using the direct method of mosaic construction. The day will teach you about chemical and natural mordanting; you will learn about and gather dye plants from around the studio and begin the dyeing process. We will also use the rust bath for tie dyeing fabric, usually linen, cotton or silk. By the end of the day you will have created a collection of dyed samples, and started to make a unique dye reference book.
